Krampus Sculpture/Ornament.
Created by Andrew Thornton. Made of hand-sculpted and painted polymer clay. Each piece is sculpted and detailed by hand, so every ornament is one of a kind. Signed and dated on the back by the artist.
From Andrew: "I know it’s a bit late for Krampus, but I made these Krampus inspired monster ornaments. They’re much bigger than more normal ones. I tried a new lightweight clay to keep the weight down. Even if I’m working with a source inspiration, I think it’s important to make it your own. I started with Krampus as the original inspiration, but have played with it and put my own stamp on it.
When I was growing up, we didn’t have a lot of money. I used to go to this shop in downtown Orlando and the owner could intuit my situation and would give me odd jobs like helping restock the shelves. Eventually she gave me a spot in her shop and I would sell little polymer clay figures for pocket money. I can’t believe that was 30 years ago! Still making creatures!
One of the things I love about Gothic architecture are the gargoyles. They adorned the exteriors of buildings as protective talismans and were used to mask practical features like water spouts. To me these creatures are little guardians. So often the world of magic and fantasy are replaced with the doldrums of adulthood. We’re told we have to be a certain way and that we have to be serious. It seems like some people’s version of growing up sucks all the color and delight out of being alive. I’d like to think these sculptures/ornaments remind us to have fun and to protect the magic of wonder and imagination."
