I grew up in Florida and lived in an old wooden house that used to be in the middle of an orange grove. Only a few gnarled trees remained from the original rows that stretched out for miles. Their fruit was too sour and the skins too tough to really eat. The rest of the grove was replaced by subdivisions and cookie cutter houses that all looked the same and green grass with sprinklers. My parents would save up and plant new trees. They planted navels and honeybells. There was a stand of cleo tangerines with small fruit easy to peel. I would bribe the daycare children next door to talk to me through a hole in the wooden fence with them. I would hide in the thorny branches that smelled like bergamot and green.
