Statement from the Artist: I have lived my whole life in Portland, Oregon. I was raised in a family of artists, always surrounded by art and design. My father was an architect and painter who frequently invited other architects and artists for dinners and parties at our home. Those were my first childhood encounters with "love" beads and sketchbooks. I also, had a glamorous art historian/librarian aunt who collected ivory, amber and trade beads. She also collected art glass beads by many glass artist friends in the 60's and 70's who were part of the Northwest Washington art scene. Add a mother who was a calligrapher, and could sew and design anything. Our household was always knee-deep in art projects! I received my BA in Art & Business from Lewis & Clark College, where I was trained in drawing, painting, and sculpture. I worked as an art director/illustrator during the 80's and 90's, and have continued to work in illustration to the present day. Over the years, I have illustrated 16 books and many gift/ad campaigns. Back in the late 80's, I started working in polymer clay and metal. Designing jewelry with metal, polymer clay, and other mixed media became a way for me to continue sculpting in a smaller format and explore my lifelong fascination with beads. I have won three Saul Bell Design competitions and other numbers awards. I have also contributed to many arts and crafts books, taught classes, and shown in various galleries and museums. In my artwork, I combine materials of varied value, utilizing lots of color and different emotional connections. Using a contrast of old and new, expensive and cheap, silly and dark, I hopefully form complex layers of meaning and value. My goal is to create art that resonates with the viewer.
