From Andrew: I don’t sleep very much, but when I do, my dreams are vivid and fantastical. They are populated with colorful creatures and otherworldly spirits. In this new series of work, I wanted to capture some of these Dreamtime denizens. When I think of these ethereal creatures made of color and feelings, the only way to really “see” them is to block out everything else. That is how I went about creating these paintings; the forms were blocked out by painting away the backgrounds and whiting them out. Once the critters emerged, I further embellished them with metallic and iridescent paints.
They might seem like a departure from the work I’ve been making, but they actually revisit some of the forms I made in art school in a series called, “Monsters of the Motherland”. That series of etchings and collages were based off of the folk stories my mom told me as a child. She’s from the Philippines and there are all kinds of creatures and fairytales that were wildly different than the Westernized tales I learned in school. I was intrigued by her stories and researched all kinds of interesting folktales. I feel as though the Dream Spirits are flavored by those stories and peppered with those details, but are their own thing.
